KUC Annual Report 2007 / 2008
"KUC, now in its 26th year, describes itself as a social enterprise which is defined as ‘a business with primarily social objectives whose
surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to
maximise profits for shareholders and owners'. As a social enterprise we tackle some of our most entrenched social and environmental
challenges and work with some of the most deprived and hardest to reach groups in our communities, whilst at the same time raising
standards for ethical business.
We value our independence as it means that we can truly represent the needs of residents in our community without fear or favor. Being
Independent also puts us in the unique position of being able to challenge the impact of public policy where this disadvantages our
users and communities, and helps to hold public and private organisations to account. We cannot do this effectively if we cannot
safeguard our independence and be true to our purpose and potential."
